While the coronavirus pandemic continues to lead to postponements, cancellations, and closures nationwide, design centers around the country seem to be remaining open for the time being. Many design centers have already cancelled or postponed all programming and events for the coming months, though most buildings’ doors are open, with individual showrooms still welcoming designers.

The Pacific Design Center, Decorative Center Houston, Dallas Market Center, Design Center of the Americas, Decoration and Design Building, New York Design Center, the Mart, and many others are all currently open as of Monday night. That said, when reached by AD PRO, each noted that designers should contact the individual showrooms they plan on visiting before coming to the design center, as many showrooms have chosen to close their doors or are restricting their hours.

As major industry trade shows like High Point Market and the Architectural Digest Design Show have postponed or canceled their events over the last couple weeks, it comes as a surprise that design centers, which often function as hubs of design industry activity within their cities, are so far not closing their doors. On Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control advised against gatherings of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks. The on Monday, President Trump took that a step further, urging people to curtail gatherings of more than 10 people. As a result of these announcements, it’s likely that the design centers will consider shutting their doors entirely in the coming days.

“Based on the current advice of local agencies, while the Mart is still open and operating, we will not be having any events of more than 50 people until further notice,” reads a statement on the Mart's website. “We recommend you reach out to the individual business or showroom prior to visiting, as some may be closed or operating on modified hours. However, as changes related to the situation are occurring on a daily basis, please check back regularly for updates.”

While design centers may be open, they’re unsurprisingly much less crowded than usual, as people are strongly urged to practice social distancing. At the Mart, the usually flooded Starbucks is practically empty, according to an Instagram user. It’s hard to imagine things are much busier on showroom floors across the country right now.
