Sotheby's Takes Its Design Sale Online - Architectural Digest

This year, the company has already earned $20 million from online sales. Often, digital-only sales are held in conjunction with live auctions of large estates, which often have many lots at different price points. In 2019, Sotheby's sold the collection of fashion superstar Marc Jacobs as part live sale, part online-only. In the online-only portion, the sale brought in around $114,000 against a low estimate of $86,000, with 85 percent sold by lot. Similar was the treatment of the collection of video game exec Ryan Brant, which brought in $217,000 against a low estimate of $147,000. Both the Jacobs and Brant sales also saw substantial new bidders who had never before taken part in a Sotheby's sale. This statistic is important to specialists and executives, who are always looking to grow their pool of engaged clients.

This Design sale has promising online potential because there are works on offer at many price points. The average lot value is around $10,000, and estimates begin at just $800. Moreover, the sale features pieces from the Marc Jacobs and Ryan Brant collections, which have already proven successful online.

From Art Nouveau to Art Deco, American Studio to Contemporary, there are pieces to draw in many types of collectors. A pair of Jean ProuvĂ© "direction" armchairs from the Marc Jacobs collection (estimate: $20,000–30,000) feature a creamy leather upholstery on a sleek aluminum-and-oak frame. "This is a really iconic model," Pollack says, "and collectors have been very excited about that." (At press time, the seats already have seven bids, up to $20,000.) From the collection of Ryan Brant, there are examples of eccentric pieces by the Campana Brothers, including a unique gilt brass cabinet (estimate: $20,000–30,000) and a black and pink "sushi" sofa (estimate: 30,000–50,000). A French Art Deco side table by Jean Dunand is also a standout (estimate: $40,000–60,000), lacquered in a brown butterscotch and topped with an eggshell inlay. Pieces like iconic Tiffany glass lamps, Frank Lloyd Wright windows, and a Harry Bertoia Sonambient are also in the mix. "Going forward," Pollack says, "I think you will probably see a growing interest and demand in online sales in all categories."
