13 Ways to Support the Design Community Right Now - Architectural Digest

Though the world has hit pause, creative practitioners have refused to quit moving forward. Deftly organizing change-management webinars and a hand sanitizer design competition, launching a face mask–making tutorial, supporting local charities—designers are rising to the occasion, fortifying their trade, work, and community in the process. Below, AD PRO rounds up a few of the ways to get involved.

Bid in Object Permanence’s Charity Auction

Object Permanence, a quarterly group exhibition that challenges designers to reimagine a single household object ranging from planters to Ping-Pong paddles, decided earlier this month to postpone its fifth edition from March 14 until further notice. Keen to carry on, its founders Leah Ring and Emma Holland Denvir will host an auction March 26 to raise money for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Lots—work donated by Object Permanence alumni including Steven Bukowski, Elyse Graham, LGS Studio, and Debbie Bean—will be sold on the project’s Instagram. Bidding starts at $50.

Join Novità’s Virtual Happy Hour

Upon completing its first week of WFH last Friday, the design-focused marketing and communications agency Novità launched a weekly virtual hangout to talk shop, current events, and recipes, and decompress over a cocktail or two. Dubbed #DesignGetsTogether, the gatherings take place on Thursdays (the day the industry typically meets for openings and events) at 5 p.m. ET via Zoom, starting today. A link with details on how to join will be posted on Novità’s Instagram every Wednesday ahead of the social.

Watch Holly Howard’s Webinar

The first of the two-part Zoom webinar “A Master Class in Crisis,” led by the beloved consultant-to-creatives Holly Howard, took place earlier this week, detailing financial resourcing, change management, and strategic planning in the midst of the unknown. If you missed it, register to watch a recording of the presentation on demand (doing so unlocks access to a private Facebook group where members share resources and keep each other accountable) and to join for a follow-up session, scheduled for next week.

Donate Unused N95 Masks

Designers with their own production facilities may have extra N95 respirators, the tight-fitting masks that filter out large droplets and small-particle aerosols, on hand for manufacturing their wares. The Brooklyn communications firm DADA Goldberg, led by Defne Aydintasbas and Rebecca Goldberg, have organized a way to get the masks to Brooklyn ER professionals. Just DM them, and they’ll take care of the rest.

Participate in This Hand Sanitizer Design Competition

Bompas and Parr, the British studio known for its extravagant culinary events and architectural jellies, recently launched Fountain of Hygiene, a competition for designers to rethink hand sanitizer pumps. A shortlist of the submissions, due by March 29, will be presented to a panel of judges during the first week of April; winning proposals will be shown at the Design Museum in London in a (likely digital) exhibition, on view April 9–May 7. In conjunction with the show’s opening, Christie’s plans to auction off the top 10 submissions and donate all proceeds to the British Red Cross.

The ASID, the 45-year-old association for interior designers, students, and industry manufacturers and suppliers, put together a great list of resources for practitioners to consult during these extraordinary times. It’s also developing a series of time-sensitive webinars on topics such as “Business as Usual: Navigating Through COVID-19” and “The Architectural Barriers Act and the Federal Government.” Visit the ASID website to view archived sessions and its developing schedule.
