Alexander Shunnarah wants you ... to design a billboard - AL.com

How big a deal is it that attorney Alexander Shunnarah is opening a public design contest for the billboards that have made him a household name in Alabama?

It feels like a pretty big deal. Carpeting the South’s roadways with ads has been good for business. The billboards are so pervasive that there have been credible reports of the “Shunnarah game” replacing Punch Buggy and Slug Bug among siblings who need an excuse to beat each other during road trips. The guy won a national award for the quality of his PR campaign. (An award from other attorneys, but still.) They’ve been parodied. There are even memes suggesting that Alabamians calculate velocity in Shunnarahs per Dollar General rather than miles per hour.

The details: The “Design-An-AlexanderShunnarah-Billboard” challenge opens Thursday, Aug. 20, and you have until Sept. 30 to submit a “Shunnarah-worthy” concept. “We want to hear from designers, artists and fans; designs don’t have to be done digitally. If someone wants to send in a drawing, we’d love to see that too,” Shunnarah himself said in a contest announcement. “We’re excited to see the people’s creativity. We are looking for a billboard design that’s bold, impactful, easy for drivers to read and unique.”

The winner gets a $500 Visa gift car and “IF their billboard is approved by the Alexander Trial Attorneys firm” -- in legal terms that’s what’s called an escape hatch -- IF it’s approved, “they will have the chance to see their design used across the state.” Second place gets a $300 Visa gift card and Shunnarah swag. Third place gets a card for $150.

Rules: All billboard designs must include the firm’s disclaimer; phone number (1-800-229-7989) and website (www.shunnarah.com); and logo. Entries should be emailed to PR@ASILPC.COM along with title of the work; the artist’s full name, age and contact info; and a “detailed reasoning” behind the concept.

Fine print: “By submitting your billboard design, the individual grants Alexander Shunnarah the license and right to use, modify and reproduce the artwork for any promotions, and on any medium by Alexander Shunnarah or relating to Alexander Shunnarah or Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys.”
