Human design is a new concept that can aid more innovative, responsible HCI (Human Computer Interaction) building. This type of design requires addressing the comprehensive needs of human beings instead of focusing merely on technical needs.

These days, virtually the entire public demands user-friendly technology for working, playing, shopping and living. For quite a few years now, app developers have been debating the best way to execute user experience design (UED). However, forward-thinking designers are routinely talking about human design instead. The term UED is increasingly seen as a limited, mechanistic term that can leave out a lot of complexity. If you embrace human design (HD), you may have an easier time promoting your flagship HCI over competing systems.

Staying Aware of All the Stakeholders

HD involves recognizing that there are more humans affected by your work than users alone. Every time someone buys your product, it effects the active stakeholders in your company’s management and engineering department. For our purposes here, an active stakeholder is a party that is not only affected by your design; they can also influence this design.

Passive stakeholders include all those people who are indirectly affected by your product design. If your company designs physical devices, passive stakeholders include the factory workers who make your product. Your design also affects the waste processors who will ultimately recycle your device. HD serves the broadest, most diverse group of people possible.

Why Integrity in Design Matters

In this age of rapid communication and intense media scrutiny, you can count on the public finding out if your company’s behavior doesn’t match your stated ethics. Here are three hacks you can use to implement HD and preserve your company’s reputation:

1. Create Emotional Interactions

Due to the magic of mirroring, people are apt to reflect the emotions they see around them. That’s why emotional interactions are so important in design. Naturally, emotional interaction design is associated most with game development. However, emotional interaction design is also evident in the design of digital mascots like Microsoft’s Clippy and Duolingo’s Language Bird.

2. Take Advantage of The Aesthetic-Usability Effect

These days, most app buyers are wary of good-looking apps that lack essential functionality. However, fewer people are aware of the seeming magic of the Aesthetic-Usability Effect (AUE). As documented by HCI researchers like M. Kurosu, the AUE is an effect whereby users tend to report greater usability in apps that are eye-pleasing. If not accounted for, the AUE can throw off your internal usability testing. Still, designing with the AUE in mind can help you gain an extra bit of credibility with the public.

3. Leverage the Serial Position Effect

If you are presented with a series of three images, you are far more likely to remember the first and last images. In psychology this is called the serial position effect (SPE). In human oriented HCI design, you can leverage the SEP to ensure users retain exactly the right information from your interface.
