The Museum of Art and Design (or MAD) shirks the decorum of many other cultural institutions. Despite its architectural grandeur and world-class curation, the museum remains true to its heritage.
Opened by Aileen Osborn Webb in 1956, what was then known as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts gave space to work that fell outside what many defined as art, and since its inception, MAD has maintained its devotion to honoring the design we live with, not just that we hang on walls.
Last night, patrons and artists gathered to toast MAD’s 65th anniversary. Before dinner, cocktails were served in a lounge designed by Fendi. Large neon constructions added a sense of surrealism as DJ Timo Weiland turned tracks. Behind the bar flashed images of benefit’s online auction, which includes pieces by the country’s most coveted contemporary artists.
Upstairs in Robert an elegant banquet was set. Wrapped in panoramic views of New York, guests caught up after what for many was nearly two years of separation.
Costume designer and drag artist Machine Dazzle played host for the evening. Dazzle’s elaborate ensemble, which made the performer look like the lovechild of Disney’s Ursula and Aladdin’s genie, dazzled diners but, due to the many tentacles and bustles, occasionally knocked into them.
The museum’s new director, Tim Rodgers stood on the podium to introduce the guest of honor: William Sofield, the architect and interior designer. From historic renovations to luxury stores, his body of work is a testament to the power of experiential environments.
“I am an animatist,” Sofield admitted. “Objects have souls and souls have voices.”
After a delicious feast of fish, attendees continued on in rapt discussions about art, design, and what the future holds.
