Ever since Design Miami debuted DM/BX—its design e-commerce platform—in September, budding collectors have been drawn to the range of limited-edition and one-of-a-kind goods on offer. With works from renowned and emerging designers alike—David Hicks, Faye Toogood, and Alexander Girard among them—every object for sale in this digital showcase of furniture, lighting, and home decor is priced between $50 and $3,000.
Count New York interior designer Kristen McGinnis among those smitten. When Design Miami CEO Jennifer Roberts’s name appeared on her caller ID, followed by a pitch to curate a tabletop series for the platform, the admiration turned into a collaboration. Today, the new tableware collection McGinnis hatched with five artistic partners is available on the site.

Photo: Alice GaoThe category launch felt like a natural fit for the designer, who has long considered her tableware. (“I was buying Fire King and Fiestaware for my college dorm from flea markets,” McGinnis says.) As of late, she’d grown frustrated with the challenges of sourcing beautiful dinnerware for her clients. So, still buoyed by the ritual of pandemic era home cooking, “and the alchemy of how everything came together,” the timing for revamping traditional tableware felt especially spot-on.
For this summer-long project, McGinnis sought out artists who she had previously worked with—plus a few she was eager to meet. She didn’t issue a design directive to them, and there weren’t any Zoom progress calls. Yet the resulting 11-piece collection, brought to life in various studios, feels organically whole.

Photo: Alice Gao“I knew I wanted a painterly quality, so why not do a tablecloth inspired by a canvas as a background for the entire table,” she says. This led to a hand-painted landscape by Yolande Milan Batteau and handwoven, metallic-brushed linen napkins by Hiroko Takeda that are gathered in Batteau’s moon gold-gilded bracelets. She tapped Farrell Hundley (her relationship with the brand goes back even further than the Fiestaware, as McGinnis has been friends with cofounder Elliott Hundley since sixth grade) to create cast bronze flatware, as well as a set of candlesticks, which resembles relics that embrace the lost wax technique.
As McGinnis puts it, it is as if “every little puzzle piece came together.” Along with a few more selections from McGinnis’s range, here are some of the other pieces we are currently loving on the newly unveiled design e-shop DM/BX.
