AI Image Creator Midjourney Reopens Free Trials After Month-Long Pause - Forbes

Midjourney, an enormously popular AI tool for creating photo-realistic images with text prompts, halted free trials at the end of March. But the company is opening up free trials again through the end of the weekend, meaning anyone can create their own Pope jackets and Trump mugshots—or anything else they can imagine.

“To celebrate the launch of V5.1 we're turning free trials back on from now until the end of the weekend. We've also refreshed the trial credits for anyone who previously tried Midjourney but didn't get a membership. Have fun!” Midjourney said in a tweet on Friday night.

Midjourney halted free trials over a month ago, which caused many people to speculate that it had something to do with internet controversies around fake viral photos like Pope Francis wearing a big puffy coat or former President Donald Trump’s mugshot. But, in reality, it had nothing to do with that.

Midjourney’s servers were simply being overwhelmed by people rushing to create images and it was impacting the ability of paying customers to create AI images.

“We stopped trials because of massive amounts of people making throwaway accounts to get free images. We think the culprit was probably a viral how-to video in China,” Midjourney CEO David Holz told me at the time.

Midjourney sells a basic plan that starts at $10 per month and a professional plan that goes for $30 per month, with price reductions if you pay annually.

In an email Friday night Holz notes it’s the first time the free trials have been available since March 28 and believes they’ll be available until Monday morning so that people in every time zone get an opportunity to play with the tech.

AI image creators have caused quite a stir in recent months, because they allow anyone to generate hyper-realistic photos that never actually happened. And while some people are concerned about the implications, that hasn’t stopped a lot of people from deploying the AI image creators for their own purposes.

The Republican Party even created an entire attack ad for YouTube and TV using nothing but fake images imagining a dystopia where President Joe Biden remains president. The ad has a tiny disclaimer in the corner that it was created using AI, but it’s hard to believe many people would see it or even care.
