The Trump administration was rough on a lot of people but none more so than Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. While it’s true that millions of Americans were negatively affected by Donald Trump’s policies—from the irreparably traumatized children separated from their parents to the hundreds of thousands who died from a virus he lied to the public about—Jared and Ivanka’s dreams were dashed. If you’re unfamiliar with that shared dream, it was to parlay their ambiguous jobs in the White House into her becoming the first female president, a fantasy they reportedly really harbored, after deciding between themselves that it would make more sense for Ivanka to run for office over Jared, as though that was something that seriously needed figuring out.
Unfortunately for the couple, the conclusion of the Trump administration involved a violent attempted coup by people Ivanka initially referred to as “patriots.” Which not only put a damper on those presidential ambitions, but made the duo pariahs in non-MAGA circles, with one former friend of Ivanka’s describing them to Vanity Fair’s Emily Jane Fox as some of “the worst, most toxic people in U.S. history.” So the two have mostly laid low since decamping to Florida from Washington, though recently, it would appear that Ivanka has embarked on an image-rehab tour, presumably with the hopes of making people forget the years 2016–2021.
Last Friday, for instance, the former first daughter returned to social media for the first time since January to inform her followers she’d helped send more than one million meals to Ukrainians suffering from Russia’s invasion. In case anyone missed the news, on Monday she posted a breathy video informing everyone again, followed by a slideshow featuring photos of Ukrainians with the food she sent.

A day later, she posted not one, not two, but seven photos of herself helping give out meals to families affected by tornadoes in New Orleans.

Obviously, delivering aid to refugees and other victims is a good thing that should be applauded, but as The Guardian’s Arwa Mahdawi notes, “it’s easy to be cynical about a Trump’s charity; quid pro quo seems to be the family motto,” and it would be nice if the former first daughter could do something selfless without having to make sure everyone knows about it. Meanwhile, it’s not clear that Ivanka was concerned about the plight of Ukrainians when her father was threatening to withhold aid to their country unless its president dug up dirt on Joe and Hunter Biden. In fact, the only thing we can remember her saying about the matter was that the Democrats who impeached him over the extortion attempt were jealous losers.
Incidentally, these humanitarian acts come as Ivanka and her family fight not to be deposed in a fraud case, and the New York attorney general’s office says it has “significant evidence” of fraud committed by the Trump Organization. But we’re sure that’s unrelated to her recent photo ops.
